- Description: EPC certificates for Scotland are now live. Unlike most Scottish property data that hides behind a paywall, this dataset is freely available. That said, the data quality could do with a sense-check, some of the errors make you wonder if anyone’s checking the homework!

One of the few Scottish property datasets that’s actually free and not stuck behind a paywall is EPC certificates. You can grab the files here:

The data runs from Q3 2015 through to Q2 2025\. Each quarterly file is around 90 MB, so it adds up fast. My epc\_scotland table is sitting at about 1.6 GB. It’s not the friendliest dataset either, with two header rows and some formatting that’ll make you shake your head.

And the quality… well, let’s just say they could do with someone double-checking the numbers. Dates ranging from 1308 to 2108 don’t exactly fill you with confidence. Typos happen, but some of these are pretty hard to miss.

That said, once you tidy up the obvious issues, it all works fine.

I’ve now added a new section for Scottish EPCs under the EPC menu.

Still not sure how deep to go with this data. Do people really care about EPC details down to wall types and floor descriptions? I’m not convinced. But for now, it’s better to have something there than nothing at all.
